Many MG owners wish to work on their owns MGs, but lack of time,
tools, or expertise limits what one can accomplish in his home
workshop. University Motors Bench Service will complement the
enthusiast's own mechanical capabilities.
You can live a great distance from University Motors, yet you
can still enjoy the aptitude and ability of our workshop. Simply
package your faulty component and ship it to us, via USPS, UPS,
Fedex, bus, truck, or air. We'll rebuild the unit and return it
to you, ready to install, and guaranteed. We prefer to work the
"old fashioned way" of first in, first out. If you have
a critical situation, if you have severe time constraints, please
let us know. We WILL work with you.
Shipping your part:
Please call BEFORE shipping your part to us. In this way we can
explain the estimated charges and provide an estimate of time
for the repair. In the case of a gearbox, master cylinder, or
carburetters - any component with fluids - you MUST completely
drain the unit BEFORE wrapping it! Neither our postal carrier
nor our UPS man enjoys a dripping box! If the component has ANY
vestiges of fluid, double wrap in garbage bags, then DOUBLE BOX
to ensure safe arrival. Double boxing is especially important
with FRAGILE components (carburetters) or with HEAVY components
(cylinder heads). Gearboxes require shipping flanges that we can
provide.
You MUST include a letter with the box which has your NAME, ADDRESS,
SHIPPING ADDRESS if different, HOME PHONE, WORK PHONE, FAX NUMBER,
EMAIL ADDRESS, YEAR and MODEL, ANY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS, and
YOUR CHARGE CARD NUMBER (or CHECK).
Core Charges:
For certain rebuilt items (MGB front suspensions, for example),
University can provide a complete assembly to you before you disassemble
your MG. This exchange program is helpful for some components
(especially front suspension) as disassembly at home, of some
components, is beyond difficult!! In these cases, we add a core
charge onto the total price. The core charge is refunded after
we receive your rebuildable with our core charge tag attached.
Available Services
Carburetters
Our
carburetter rebuilds are show quality! They are absolutely brilliant
in every respect. We can work wonders with any set of carbs, no
matter how horrid the abuse or neglect of the former owners.
We will: disassemble the carbs; glass bead each part; chase all
threads; surface mating flanges; rebush the bodies; fit new standard
shafts; highly polish the suction chambers; match air pistons;
buff all brass linkages; replate all steel parts; provide new
gaskets, jets, needles, needles & seats; and return with instructions.
We service Sus and Strombergs for other British marques.

Distributors
Often
forgotten in the Tune-up, the distributor is critical to proper
engine performance. We will completely disassemble, repair or
replace faulty parts, rebush if necessary, check the mechanical
and vacuum advance, and set the dwell, and will also test the
coil, wires, cap, and rotor if you include them in your shipment.

Kingpins
Kingpin kits are available from many sources, but the suppliers
fail to explain that the new bushings must be installed and reamed.
We have the factory tools and years of experience. To save yourself
hours of hard work and frustration, purchase our kit, THEN return
the cores.

Brake Callipers
For
years the MG callipers were free from fault. Now we often see
frozen and rusty MGA and MGB/Midget callipers. We use the MGB
piston modification in MGA callipers; its better and less expensive
than original piston. We thoroughly disassemble the units, glassbead
the hydraulic and dust seal areas, surface the mating flanges,
fit new pistons, new bleeders, and spray the units in black enamel.

Gearboxes
Rebuilding a gearbox is less complicated than an engine, but most
owners pale when they open the inspection cover and see all those
teeth! We are pleased to rebuild your gearbox, using new gaskets,
seals, shafts, bearings and gears where necessary to ensure a
noiseless and smooth operation. The parts requirements widen the
range of prices, but we have thousands of excellent used parts
from which to draw - and save you some money. Even a rebuilt gearbox
can chatter if the remote control unit is faulty. We rebush both
T and A units and fit new shafts.

TD/TF Differential Conversions
The original gears in the TD and TF rear axle (4.875 or 5.125)
cause the engine to scream at over 4000 rpm on the highway. By
fitting a lower gear ratio into the rear axle, that engine speed
(and piston speed) can be greatly reduced. With the 4.3 gears,
the car will cruse along at 65 mph at about 3500 rpm. Because
of the construction of the differential, it is more than an all
day job to set up the distances and pre-loads. We will discuss
with you the best ratio for your use.
We also convert the TC diffs to taper bearings and can improve
the TC rear hub/half shaft assy as defined in Mike Sherrell"s
"TCs Forever." We can also convert your MG TC hubs to
accept the double roller MGA bearings.

Lucas Alternators
Many "professionally rebuilt" Lucas alternators are
faulty or wired incorrectly. Ours are right and tested! We can
"rebuild" the unit so that it works, or we can "restore"
the unit, replacing ALL the internals, bearings, and painting
it to look attractive.

Wiper Motors
Years of use, a winter's day of abuse, water in the wiper rack,
damp storage, or simply a desire for complete restoration - these
are all reasons for a wiper motor rebuild. We completely dissemble
the units, clean every part, inspect and replace the brushes and/or
armature, if needed, shine the aluminium parts and repaint the
black parts.

Tandem Master Cylinders
Brake cylinders are usually easily rebuilt - except this one.
As no internals are available, except the rubber seals, one false
move and a new cylinder is needed. We have rebuilt hundreds. We
also rebuild the dual circuit master cylinders AND servos for
